Look ahead for September 14th, 2015

Notes from the Principal:

Perhaps for the first time since we have had children in the classrooms we are without a week of professional development, principal meetings, due dates, testing windows, etc...  We can all take a collective breath and enjoy working with students.  Enjoy this week, plan accordingly, and allow your students to showcase their skills.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Generic Morning Announcement: - Plan on getting new announcements filmed this week and ready for the next weeks going forward.

Weekly Staff Spotlight:

Shaun Ross - Principal

I am in the midst of my 14th year in education and 10th as a principal.  I was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas and a product of  Tascosa High School where I ran track and sang in the honor choir. With a short, one year, stop at Fort Hayes State University in Kansas I would eventually graduate from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.  I would later receive my Master degree in education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas (Southwest of Fort Worth).  I spent 11 years in Texas working in Amarillo, Copperas Cove and Azle.  Each place afforded me the opportunity to grow as an educator and work with some special people.

I enjoy Oklahoma Football on Saturdays in Norman.  I love to play golf and always have a desire to play.  (I actually broke 70, which has always been a goal of mine, this past August.  I also got my second hole in one this past March while playing golf with my dad.)  I have a family farm around Altus Oklahoma that we never see enough.  It is quiet, the cell reception is horrible and the land is always needing tended.  In other words, it's a great getaway.

I have a desire to receive my doctoral degree from the University of Oklahoma, although I would also accept that piece of paper from just about any school of higher learning as you can tell by my other two schools.  I will have to make a new goal for golf as I have met two goals this summer.  I also have a goal to be the best father I can be to my son.  After all he carries my name.

I also have a goal professionally:  I do not measure my success by the letter grades that Hayes, or anywhere else, receives or by the attendance rates of our students.  I don't sit and think how well I am doing by how many things I can say my school is doing.  I measure student success by the number of individuals I have taught or led that go and get their high school diploma, go to a trade school or college and make a change in this world.  I measure my success as an campus leader by the number of para-professionals who become teachers, teachers who continue their education, and teachers who become counselors, academic coaches or building leaders.  I want to have a successful "coaching tree" when I leave the profession.

Today, at Hayes, we have four para-professionals who are wanting to become teachers.  We also have several teachers who are wanting to get into administration.  I also have an asst. principal who will get her own campus soon.  In addition I know there are several staff who are wanting, or are in the process of, continuing their education with a higher degree.  What a "tree" we are making at Hayes Elementary.

The student will then proceed with the pre-test. Once the student has completed the pre-test, a box will pop-up asking for a monitor password to advance to the real assessment portion.  Please note that the student will select the class labeled reading for both STAR Math and STAR Reading after they select the designated assessment from their dashboard.
