Look ahead for August 31st, 2015

Notes from the Principal:

It is important to reach out to all of your student's parents, not only for conferences but also throughout the year to update them on their child's progress.  It is my hope that you as a teacher are making phone calls on a regular basis to parents updating them on their child's progress, involving them in decisions about the child academically and ensuring that communication lines are open.  If you have not been calling parents... what are you waiting for?

The first round of parent conferences are Thursday evening and Friday morning.  This DOES NOT mean that you can't have those conferences early.  If a parent can't come in Thursday or Friday but can Tuesday... Then have the meeting Tuesday after school.  Please remember why we are here... for the students.  The goal for Hayes is to have 100% participation with parent conferences in every grade level.

Please remember when speaking to your student's parents that they are wanting the best for their children.  Odds are they know if their child is a trouble maker.  Do we as educators really need to spend all of the conference explaining how many times you had to ask him to stop pestering his peers, kicking the chair in front of him, and not completing his assignments?  Make these conferences about academics.  Tell those parents what you as his/her teacher is going to do differently to ensure that academics are the priority.

This is what parents need to hear:
1.  Where their child is academically right now.
2.  How you are going to move them academically throughout the year.
3.  What interventions you have in place to ensure that academic progress.
4.  Where you want them to be academically by the end of the school year.
5.  How parents can help their child out academically throughout the year.

If you do not cover those items, you are not using the conference time in an academically productive manner.  That is not to say that other concerns can't be brought up and discussed.  If there are other concerns, please bring them up in a professional manner and look for solutions rather than "tattling" on the child.

***Please remember to invite the appropriate personnel to your parent conference if they see that particular child:  Ms. Green, Ms. Perry, Ms. Hutchison, Ms. Rodriguez.

Notes from the Principal:

I believe we have been focusing WAY to much on Engagement.  (You gotta continue reading to really smell what I'm cookin')

Engagement has long been the buzz word in the world of education.  I hear it dropped on the daily from my bosses and at our weekly principal's meetings.  If I had a nickel for every time I heard "engagement" or "fidelity" I'd have enough to retire to the Texas hill country.  It's not their fault entirely for there is a long held belief that as we continue to increase engagement we will see an increase in test scores and improve overall student performance.  I myself talk, again daily, about increasing student engagement in the classroom.  It has been drilled into my head and is now a full blown habit. However, engagement is not without merit.  I think engagement is a great starting point for creating excited students. But engaging students is only part of our job.

Engagement means getting kids excited about OUR content, interests and curriculum. After all engagement by definition is "busy or occupied."  The biggest problem that comes to my mind when someone says increase the engagement is that engagement requires someone else to create the learning opportunity for the student.  Without the WOW factor or entertainment aspect the learning ceases to exist.  How can a student develop an ownership of their learning without them being empowered to do so?  The real power in learning does not come from students being engaged.  The real power in learning comes from "empowering" our students to become life-long learners.

Empowering our students means giving them the knowledge and skills to pursue their passions, interests and future in our society.  Empowering our students means that we as educators are giving them the skills to be life long learners as well as the tools to positively impact the greater community.
Our students need to be empowered and NOT engaged.  How are you as a classroom teacher going to ensuring that our students are becoming self-directed learners?  How do we empower our students to take ownership of their learning?

As your campus leader I want to find ways to empower you as teachers.  I often say "when we talk" or "at the next meeting"...  It is high time that I focus a little less on checking boxes and focus more on ensuring you as teachers are meeting the daily challenges and achieving the goals we set for ourselves and the school as a whole.  Get ready.

Notes from the Principal:

Thank you for a great first week of school.  I feel it has been the best of my three years in the building.  Continue to push those procedures and routines.  It is also important that you continue to get to know your students.  How well you know your students and their needs will help tremendously as Learner First continues to be implemented.

How often do you as a classroom teacher get, and more importantly, keep your students in a stretched "zone" of learning?  How often do we ourselves get out of our comfort zones and stretch our abilities to reach students with a lesson or activity?

Things to think about for when I come by your rooms throughout the week:
- What specific, measurable, goals do you have for your class and grade level?
-  Are you maximizing instruction time or are you classes losing time for bathroom visits, poor hallway procedures and lack of preparation?
- How are you measuring student progress and how are your grades looking?
- Where is your comfort zone right now with your students and subject areas?

Notes from the Principal:

The first day of school is meant to be a great experience, but it does not mean we have to fill the day with things to do.  It does not mean we put on our entertainers outfit and try to recreate a three ring circus in our classrooms.
The first day of school means that we take our very first steps towards getting to know our students and developing ways to meet their needs.  That can only happen in a meaningful and lasting way if we take things slowly.  Only if we allow time to just sit, talk, listen, be.  So, as you have plan the very first day of school, make time for quiet, for reflection, for conversation.  Don't spend so much time for all of the things.  Because in the end this isn't about how to prove how fun you will be this year or how much the students will learn, it is about showing your students that you care for them.

A reminder of 5 things to avoid as we start this school year:

1.  Not asking for Help. - If you need help, ask!  You will not annoy your co-workers or campus administration if you have questions.   If you are struggling in an area, classroom management for example, talk to campus administration or your veteran teachers to get some ideas in order to keep the classroom a place for learning.
2. Afraid of being firm with your students. - DO NOT BE A DOORMAT.  Do not be afraid to show your students that you are unhappy about their behavior.  Think about the students who are missing out on instruction because of disruptions and an unsafe environment... If that doesn't make you want to take control, firm up, and do what's best for the students you may need to have a long talk with yourself.
3. Not knowing it's OK to leave the to-do list unfinished at the end of the day. - We will have days that are longer than others, but DO NOT PANIC if you leave stuff on your to-do list.  Set yourself a time to go home and address your time sensitive things first.  Tomorrow is another day.
4. Spending WAY to much $$$. It is very easy to offer extrinsic rewards, restock supplies yourself, and not know available resources we have at Hayes Elementary.  Some ideas on keeping your hard earned money in your pocket:  Limit those rewards, find the stores that have teacher discounts, utilize the teacher warehouse, ask your peers for available resources.
5. Worrying too much. - Some worry is valid, other worries are totally ridiculous.   If you are investing in your students, designing reasonably effective lessons (even if they aren't as effective as they were in your head), and being diligent about identifying and fixing the things that truly aren't working, your students will learn.  Even if you feel like a total failure, I can promise as someone who's been there that you're not.  Keep doing your best and try to improve where you can, but don't get so hung up on the silly stuff that you are paralyzed by fear or burn out.
