Look ahead for August 29, 2016

Notes from Mr. Ross:

There are seven million minutes from Pre-K to graduation. Don't waste a moment!

Parent conferences are Thursday and Friday this week. Hayes has traditionally held parent conferences Thursday evening from 3:30pm to 7:00pm and taken a half day on Friday, having meetings from 8:00am to noon. It is your responsibility to set up conferences in order to meet as many parents as possible. It is not acceptable for our departmentalized staff members to sit together and meet as a group. I know parents have a desire to talk to everyone but it makes it impossible to meet with 80 plus sets of parents. So, you will need to be flexible and aware of your partners needs and concerns. YOU CAN MEET WITH PARENTS AT ANYTIME AFTER SCHOOL OR DURING PLANNING THIS WEEK TO ENSURE EVERYONE GETS A CHANCE TO VISIT.

Handouts will be sent out our during parent conferences indicating that the infinite campus APP for parent's smart phones will be operational. In short, that means our parents will have access to their child's grades ANYTIME they want them. Teachers are required to have their assignments AND grades in weekly. Now anyone can see what's going on in your classrooms at anytime. Our lessons, assignments and grades need to be aligned with the school district and state standards. It appears Mr. Wells was correct, big brother is here.

By the time parent conferences begin on Thursday I expect the math word walls, mountain math and anything else that has been requested on the walls and being utilized. No exceptions.

Once the student has successfully logged on, they will then select either STAR Early Literacy (K-1), STAR Reading (2-6) or STAR Math (2-6). After selecting an assessment, the student will need to select the class labeled reading. The student will then proceed with the pre-test. Once the student has completed the pre-test, a box will pop-up asking for a monitor password to advance to the real assessment portion. Please note that the student will select the class labeled reading for both STAR Math and STAR Reading after they select the designated assessment from their dashboard.

Week four here we come! It is very pleasing to be able to walk around the building and see all the learning going on in classrooms.

Short message from me this week. It includes a request that you communicate with your students. While it is really nice to have the "rock star status" in various parts of the building it is distracting to the learning process when I walk in and all of the students stop what they are doing to say hello. So... I am asking that the students are coached to give me a wink. This will help to minimize distractions while allowing the students to acknowledge me. Clearly the older grades (4,5,6) do not need to apply this practice since their is no such thing as "rock star status" in those grades.

Thanks for all your hard work. It is appreciated.

I am very happy with most of the things I have been seeing these past two weeks. Continue to emphasize routines and procedures as these will carry you throughout the school year. "Pay me now or pay me later" was the saying my college track coach yelled out at the beginning of every practice for the three years I worked under him. He would make that comment when we athletes went out to fast in the first of several reps. I'd like to think it fits in this case for setting a tone that will last beyond the honeymoon period at the beginning of every school year. You need to set the tone now or run the risk of having the students run you from September all the way to May.

RSA Assessments begin Monday! The links below are the Single Sign On URLS for STAR 360, teachers and students (you must be on network or on VPN). The students link should already be copied to student computers and also appear under OKCPS bookmarks on Chromebooks. Of course, they’ll enter their network credentials to gain access.
Administrators have a different login link (NOT SSO), which most of your should already have. If not, reach out to Leigh Parks and she’ll pass that along to you

SUPER IMPORTANT: Infinite Campus shows about 32 sections that do not have a primary teacher assigned to the HOMEROOM course. If there isn’t a primary teacher assigned, those students will be unable to test. If you wait until Mondayto fix, it takes about 24 hours for the next upload to Renaissance Learning and time for the data files to process before they’ll appear in STAR 360.

- Hayes Elementary's Pre-K classes are again introducing colors to their classes this week. As a result I have the days/colors the front office staff will be wearing this week. Please feel free to join in wearing the following colors on the following days.

*** - Remember that Tuesday evening is Hayes Elementary's open house. It is from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. This isn't parent conferences, there ARE NO R.S.A. forms to fill out... Be yourself. We have a short 5 question survey for you and your parents to fill out. It will begin to help encourage those year-long positive conversations that we all worked so hard with the Learner First last year. Para-professionals do not have to attend Tuesday evening.

Look ahead for August 1, 2016

Notes from Mr. Ross:

You were NOT hired to maintain the status quo. You were hired to make a difference and make an impact. Do not forget that. You are a part of the academic growth and continued success at Hayes Elementary.

The first day of school means that we take our very first steps towards getting to know our students and developing ways to meet their needs. That can only happen in a meaningful and lasting way if we take things slowly. Only if we allow time to just sit, talk, listen, be. So, as you have plan the very first day of school, make time for quiet, for reflection, for conversation. Don't spend so much time for all of the things. Because in the end this isn't about how to prove how fun you will be this year or how much the students will learn, it is about showing your students that you care for them.

As in the two previous first week posts I am adding an older post. It is still a great reminder for everyone from the first year teacher to the 40+ year teaching vet.

Five things to avoid at the beginning of the school year!

1. Not asking for Help. - If you need help, ask! You will not annoy your co-workers or campus administration if you have questions. If you are struggling in an area, classroom management for example, talk to campus administration or your veteran teachers to get some ideas in order to keep the classroom a place for learning.
2. Afraid of being firm with your students. - DO NOT BE A DOORMAT. Do not be afraid to show your students that you are unhappy about their behavior. Think about the students who are missing out on instruction because of disruptions and an unsafe environment... If that doesn't make you want to take control, firm up, and do what's best for the students you may need to have a long talk with yourself.
3. Not knowing it's OK to leave the to-do list unfinished at the end of the day. - We will have days that are longer than others, but DO NOT FREAK if you leave stuff on your to-do list. Set yourself a time to go home and address your time sensitive things first. Tomorrow is another day.
4. Spending WAY to much $$$. It is very easy to offer extrinsic rewards, restock supplies yourself, and not know available resources we have at Hayes Elementary. Some ideas on keeping your hard earned money in your pocket: Limit those rewards, find the stores that have teacher discounts, utilize the teacher warehouse, ask your peers for available resources.
5. Worrying too much. - Some worry is valid, other worries are totally ridiculous. If you are investing in your students, designing reasonably effective lessons (even if they aren't as effective as they were in your head), and being diligent about identifying and fixing the things that truly aren't working, your students will learn. Even if you feel like a total failure, I can promise as someone who's been there, for 11 years now, that you're not. Keep doing your best and try to improve where you can, but don't get so hung up on the silly stuff that you are paralyzed by fear or burn out. The race is long.

Look ahead for May 16, 2016

Notes from Mr. Ross:

Just a few reminders as we hit the final two weeks of the 2015-2016 school year. NO videos, no exceptions. Take your kids outside, teach a lesson outside, have some activities to keep your students engaged in school. This time of year is no different than any other, our students need to be engaged or they will begin to entertain themselves.

I need everyone's LLI/ Star360 papers ASAP. They were due Friday; expect some questions/a conversation as to why they weren't turned in on time.

If you guys are doing anything special in your classroom the next few weeks you need to let the office know. If we don't know we will be telling the parents "no" and then... Yikes! Please remember to follow the district policy in regards to parties... we've had our two for the year.

I have not heard anything in regards to our textbooks for next year. I have heard rumors that we will be using treasures, Heaven help us, for another year as well as being told our book rooms and guided reading books will be our reading curriculum. I will say a 30 million dollar short fall will cause people to do some crazy things. I will keep you posted on any information as I hear it.

I will leave you with the knowledge that we've hired a sixth grade teacher and a Principal's secretary for next year. I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt that I am excited about the hires we have made for next year. I think we will continue to improve ourselves as a staff and for the betterment of our students.
