Look ahead for May 8, 2017

Notes from Mr. Ross:

There is research that suggests that the human brain reacts to receiving a compliment in a similar fashion to that of being given money. The article suggested that using compliments is an easy and effective strategy to use in the classroom. It also stated that giving compliments can actually be a crucial component in finalizing a person's skill development. How many of us feel that immediate boost and positive feeling when someone compliments us? The irony is how easy it is to go days or even weeks without giving or receiving a compliment, so perhaps the final weeks of the school years we should make it a priority to compliment someone as a part of our daily routine.

Here are six important reasons for us to begin complimenting more.

- Compliments encourage others who are struggling
- A compliment can be all that stands between someone finding success or giving up
- Compliments help people learn new tasks
- Compliments strengthen and soften relationships
- Compliments increase our circle of influence
- Compliments help you become less cynical

My challenge to you is to purposefully look for opportunities to make someone's day with a compliment these final few weeks of the school year. Be authentic and sincere in your's and gracious and thankful if you receive a compliment for yourself. Let's have a great week.

Once the student has successfully logged on, they will then select either STAR Early Literacy (K-1), STAR Reading (2-6) or STAR Math (2-6). After selecting an assessment, the student will need to select the class labeled reading. The student will then proceed with the pre-test. Once the student has completed the pre-test, a box will pop-up asking for a monitor password to advance to the real assessment portion. Please note that the student will select the class labeled reading for both STAR Math and STAR Reading after they select the designated assessment from their dashboard.

Look ahead for April 24, 2017

Notes from Mr. Ross:

For the remaining weeks of the 2016-2017 school year we will be fighting the Pygmalion Effect, aka the "self fulfilling prophecy." Research in the late 1960's showed a direct correlation between how teacher expectations influence student performance both positively and negatively. When we as teachers have high expectations for our students they perform at a higher level, conversely, negative or low expectations have students performing exactly how we imagine them.
If you want a classroom that is a true learning environment you must first start with the belief that the students that make up your classroom can do the work. If you feel that your students can learn through hard work, engagement and opportunities for meaningful learning, then your classroom has the right climate to increase student achievement.
It is very easy to say that we believe in our students, it is more important to have your actions match your words. Your actions, as simple as a smile in some cases, have to match what you are saying, after all, those actions speak much louder than your words ever will. We continue to talk about allowing our students to have more choice in their learning only to have ourselves refuse to take risks because the students aren't "capable" of behaving appropriately or doing the work. This simple action has to change in order to match our words and more importantly change our student achievement outcomes.
Sometimes the best way to change our beliefs is to change how we are teaching our students. We have so many wonderful things to be thankful for here at Hayes Elementary. I look forward to seeing the creativity and various opportunities to learn throughout the building. Let's have a great week.

Ignore the Critics; Do the Work

Excerpt from The Power of Positive Leadership by Jon Gordon

Positive leaders don't lead because they want recognition or enemies. They lead because there is something they must do, build, create, transform and change. They lead because it's who they are and what they are meant to do. However, with leadership comes scrutiny, praise, critics, and attacks. A leader could find a cure for cancer and would still have some people criticize them for it. There was even once a leader who transformed the world by feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and loving the unlovable, and yet he was killed for it. If you are a leader, expect to be attacked. Positive leadership doesn't mean you won't be criticized. It means you have the grit and belief to overcome it. Positive leaders don't lead in a tranquil sea of positivity, but through the storms of adversity and negativity.

Leadership is knowing that the critics will criticize you while still saying what needs to be said and doing what needs to be done. History doesn't remember the critics. It remembers the one who withstood criticism to accomplish something great.

In our modern social-media-driven world, you will have more fans and critics than ever. The keys are: Don't let praise go to your head and don't let critics into your head. Be so invested in your craft that you don't have time to listen to the naysayers. No time for negativity. You're too busy creating the future. If I would have listened to the naysayers and critics, I would have stopped working on my craft years ago. I want to encourage you to never let the opinion of others define you and your future. Your identity doesn't come from what the world says about you. It comes from who you are on the inside. Your work, leadership, and mission are too important to allow others to define your destiny.

No matter what anyone says, just show up and do the work.

If they praise you, show up and do the work.
If they criticize you, show up and do the work.
If no one notices you, just show up and do the work.
Just keep showing up, doing the work, and leading the way.

Lead with passion.
Fuel up with optimism.
Have faith.
Power up with love.
Maintain hope.
Be stubborn.
Fight the good fight.
Refuse to give up.
Ignore the critics.
Believe in the impossible.
Show up.
Do the work.

You'll be glad you did.
True grit leads to true success.

When teachers love their jobs, kids notice. When teachers are counting down the days, kids notice. It turns out that kids notice a lot. - Danny Steele

As we begin week two in the OCCT testing window it is worth stating that the school year's not over, not even close, not by a long shot. This time of year we should be focusing on those "bridge skills" necessary for our students to make the move, for some of our students it's a HUGE leap, to the next grade level. We do not stop teaching, we don't take two hour brain breaks, we don't make all of our doctor appointments when summer's a month and some change away. We continue to teach, knowing that what skills we teach now pay off down the road.

Continue to teach, engage your students in quality lessons that connect learning to their lives and enjoy every minute you have with them.

Look ahead for April 3, 2017

Notes from Mr. Ross:

In my opinion there is no better time of year than the first few weeks in April.
Right now kids ages seven to 15 are competing in the Drive, Chip and Putt contest at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. The Drive, Chip and Putt contest marks the opening of The Masters Golf Tournament where the best golfers in the world compete for a green jacket and anyone who plays the game longs to see before they die.
Today marks the Opening Day for the 2017 MLB season. Few things in life are better than attending an opening day game at a Major League stadium. The sounds, smells, food, cold beer and overall optimism that "this could be the year" makes for an unforgettable experience and one everyone should experience.
North Carolina and Gonzaga will play for the NCAA men's basketball championship. (Thanks Kansas for wrecking my bracket. You did it to me again!) The Mississippi State woman's basketball team pulled a HUGE upset over the Connecticut women's basketball team and will play South Carolina for the Woman's basketball championship.
Easter is but a few short days away. (This one will be extra special for me as it will be the first that my son hunts Easter Eggs.) Easter is a time where everyone can take pause and remember that we have a new beginning and forgiveness promised. Who hasn't grown up watching Charlton Heston as Moses in The Ten Commandments on NBC?
April also means "Testing." A word, or phrase if you put a sentence enhancer in front of it, that is often met with negativity and the opinion of "it's horrible what we do to these kiddos." I tend to think it's an opportunity for all of the school's stake holders to show the state education department how well our kiddos can do despite the lack of resources and support. So here's our moment as Hayes Cardinals, our moment to shine. All of the hard work, sweat, blood and sometimes tears has come to this moment... How will we and our kids respond? How will we act for the next few weeks to show that we care about our kids, our school and our co-workers? Will we yell our kids into believing they can do it? Does a quiet/ compliant classroom mean that our kids are ready? Time is precious now. How we treat our kids can make a HUGE difference in how they perform for us in the coming weeks. As a coach I was reminded everyday that effort and belief ALWAYS beats talent. This same can be said as I am now a principal. Please remember you catch more flies with honey as we ask these students to compete on the academic playing field.

Look ahead for March 27, 2017

Notes from Mr. Ross:

Are the OCCT exams important for Hayes Elementary and OKCPS? The answer takes me back to my coaching days in Texas; IF THEY KEEP SCORE, THEN IT COUNTS. The OCCT exams are the "game" in which we are being held accountable by the State of Oklahoma. Just one example is when people go to look to buy a home. One of the first things people look at in a potential house is the neighborhood school. A school's success drives, in part, the home's price, the desire of the neighborhood, and the greater community in general. If you don't believe me just pull up a real estate listing and on the first page you will see what elementary, middle, high school and school district a house feeds into. It's right there next to the overall price and taxes for the property. Why would Realtors put what school and district a home feeds into if it didn't matter how well the school and district are performing? Whether you like it or hate it, whether you find high stakes testing valid or invalid, the numbers indicate that these exams are important part of what we do as educators. Yes, the OCCT exams matter to Hayes Elementary, it's staff, community and all stake holders.

In order for Hayes to continue it's journey towards becoming a high performing school we must continue to push our culture of high expectations, time on task approach, parents as partners and professional collaboration between staff members. All of our beliefs will be tested in six school days when our students begin the OCCT exams. Focus on what's right and "don't stop until you hear the whistle." Every second counts, including the next few weeks of instruction for your students.

The fact that it's been over a month since I've sent one of these is... disappointing.

Let's have a great week this week. Be on the look out for an increase in behaviors and not just because of spring break fever. Many of our kids will not have a steady meal or any consistency for the those two weeks. Some will come to intersession for no other reason than to keep routines and consistency in their lives. Some just like coming to school. Cherish your time with these students, even the ones who drive you nuts, as our time with them is short and fleeting. Be the difference in these students lives.

Dr. Seuss Week/ Read Across America Week is this week. Have fun, cut loose and participate.

Monday: Cat in the HAT DAY
Tuesday: Fox in SOCKS Day
Wednesday: Mismatched clothes (I have NO idea on the connection to Seuss)
Thursday: GREEN eggs and ham DAY (Wear green)
Friday: Read, White and Blue day (Cat in the Hat)

Monday February 27, 2017 - Normal School Day, 1 IEP

Tuesday February 28, 2017 - Normal School Day; 3 IEP meetings; No Faculty Meeting; Intersession prep. at Hayes Elementary after school. (3:30pm to 5:00pm) Staff working intersession are asked to come after school and prepare for next week. (This will earn a snow day make up.)

Wednesday March 1, 2017 - Normal school day

Thursday March 2, 2017 - Normal School Day; 1st and 2nd grade musical @ 2:30pm and 6:00pm; OKCPS job fair @ John Marshall High School (4:00pm - 7:00pm)

Friday March 3, 2017 - Spring Break Begins!!!!!!!!
