As we come to the final full week of the 2016-2017 school year it is important we take a moment to enjoy all of the experiences that made this year memorable. I thought I would take a moment and share a few of my favorite experiences that have made this year great and reinforce that the staff at Hayes Elementary is the best in OKCPS. Here are just a few...
- Watching Ms. Nolan use her drama and stage experience, as well as her sense of humor and personality, to turn a very difficult four year old into a young lady ready to go to kindergarten. She showed patience and a level of understanding that is well beyond her years of experience all while keeping her smile intact and the rest of her students learning.
- Ms. Rich having the courage to take a kindergarten classroom two days before school in August. She showed that experience in the classroom and desire to do what's best for students creates a learning environment where students are cherished and learning can take place everyday.
- Ms. Wolfe for beating the hell out of cancer and never letting it get the best of her or change her attitude.
- Seeing Ms. Corbin take all of the ESL students in second grade, teaching them in English AND Spanish, and having those children produce some of the highest academic scores in the school. Amazing!
- Ms. Flores showing her third graders what it means to be a professional.
- The fourth grade team (Green, Freire and Barahona) working together. These three ladies give new meaning to "team." It was amazing to watch these ladies work together.
- Ms. Billy for being the poster girl, flag bearer, and voice for Hayes Elementary. When I think of what it is to be a Hayes Cardinal I think of Ms. Billy and her ability to work with every child, parent and staff member. She is the consummate professional.
- Ms. Rogers for taking an entire sixth grade group of students and averaging 4 years of academic growth in mathematics in ONE school year.
- Ms. Leyva and Ms. Hunter for being secretaries, counselors, nurses, repairmen, copy makers, copy machine fixers, disciplinarians, lamination queens, and most importantly putting up with campus administration. If the parents, teachers and students knew how much the front office deals with on a daily basis these ladies would get more than cokes and candy.
- Ms. Seybolt for having the courage to make her mark on the academics of Hayes Elementary and ensuring that teachers had their needs met on a daily basis.
- Ms. Leann Jackson for taking on the responsibility of a VERY difficult child and showing that perseverance and patience can make a big difference in the academics and socialization of a child.
- Ms. Bozeman for being an advocate for her and Mr. Body's students. ...24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
- Ms. Kainz for adapting and adjusting her instruction to meet the needs of some of the most difficult children in the building. Watching her students light up when it was their "day" was fantastic and showed that even the most difficult children want to be loved, heard and a part of something bigger than themselves. She never gave up on those students and showed a resiliency unmatched in the building.
- Ms. Kainz for believing that "orange" backwards spelled "gullible."
- The ESL and SpEd departments working non-stop with their students. All of these ladies took our difficult learners and moved them academically. We had academic growth with all of our special education and ESL students. That has never happened in our time together at Hayes.
- Ms. Obuobisa, Ms. Davisson and Ms. Herriott continuing to allow our students to be a part of Hayes Elementary after the school day ends. These ladies continue to offer after school programs so that our students can have ways to connect with their school beyond the classroom.
Smile, breathe, and enjoy this last full week of school with your students. Thank you for all of your hard work this year. I look forward to continuing our journey towards excellence. We are truly changing the world everyday.

Once the student has successfully logged on, they will then select either STAR Early Literacy (K-1), STAR Reading (2-6) or STAR Math (2-6). After selecting an assessment, the student will need to select the class labeled reading. The student will then proceed with the pre-test. Once the student has completed the pre-test, a box will pop-up asking for a monitor password to advance to the real assessment portion. Please note that the student will select the class labeled reading for both STAR Math and STAR Reading after they select the designated assessment from their dashboard.
