I will be sitting down with grade level teachers throughout the week to discuss our plans for teaching assignments for the 2016-2017 school year. As I have said I am looking to put our campus in the best position moving forward. The timing is right as we will all be on equal footing when the new academic standards, new textbooks and new district direction all come into play. I am going to be putting staff into "best fit and best agree" positions throughout the campus. I will not be putting anyone into positions where they cannot be successful and help our students academically.
I feel that, as a whole, our staff has gained valuable experience, perspective and a deeper understanding of the students that walk through our school doors. Personally I feel my views as an educator have greatly expanded as the campus principal of Hayes Elementary.
As we have gone through the Learner First Process this year it has become increasing apparent to me that we have trended in the right direction in so many ways. As a whole the staff has become increasing in tune with the needs of our students. We have taken a long look and made some systemic changes towards the real problems our school is facing. On the whole our students are doing much better academically than just three years ago.
Our discussions this past week has centered around our need to increase the connectivity between us and parents. Not by having more "dads for donuts" or "Smart Nights" but by engaging them as partners in their children's education. I am writing about this today because parents as true partners is vital to the growing process of our students.
Parents as partners does so many things for us as educators. For the remainder of our time this year, during our Learner First discussions, we will be focusing on this very topic.
- What does parent engagement truly look like?
- How do we empower our parents to be partners with the school to improve the overall academics of all students in the building?
- What can we do as educators to improve our parents as partners?
- Are we connecting with our parents and their children in order to build positive and lasting relationships?
Keep smiling and fake it 'til you make it!

Once the student has successfully logged on, they will then select either STAR Early Literacy (K-1), STAR Reading (2-6) or STAR Math (2-6). After selecting an assessment, the student will need to select the class labeled reading. The student will then proceed with the pre-test. Once the student has completed the pre-test, a box will pop-up asking for a monitor password to advance to the real assessment portion. Please note that the student will select the class labeled reading for both STAR Math and STAR Reading after they select the designated assessment from their dashboard.
