Look ahead for January 4, 2016

Notes from the Principal:

Welcome back.  I hope everyone had as good and relaxing a holiday break as I did.  I turned off my district cell phone the Friday we got out and did not turn it back on until this morning...

After much thought and deliberation I have the slogan for Hayes for the remainder of the school year...  "Ours."

I think that for the past two plus years I have been focused on the "my."  My school, my staff, my students, my career, and so on.  As I was thinking about the focus for the rest of this year it became clear that I have, of sorts, been selfish.  In a round about way all of the schools goals have been selfishly driven.  Then, while watching Clemson monkey stomp the Sooners, the word "ours" came to mind.

Spending time in four school districts as a teacher, coach and administrator has taught me a lot.  The two biggest things I've come to learn is how much better organizations are by working together for a common goal and that no one, not even me, can go at this journey alone.

Hayes Elementary is not mine.  It's ours.  Hayes is a family created by stakeholders; parents, community members, staff and students.

The career I've carved is not mine.  It is a reflection of the people who have worked with me and those I draw around me.  It is a reflection of those who have pushed me, made me think, challenged me, questioned me and encouraged me to become more.

The person I've become isn't all about me.  I can't transform a culture alone.  I have to trust more of those around me, lean on more people for help and show a willingness to open up.

The kids that come to Hayes Elementary aren't mine.  They are "ours."  And it will take every single one of us, from the principal to the maintenance men, to help impact their lives.  Because of the impact I make today, hopefully, may be made even deeper by the impact you leave starting tomorrow.  We must realize that EVERY kid that enters Hayes Elementary are "ours."

So, in closing, I want everyone to start thinking more about us.  Start working more closely together, sharing the spotlight and successes as a faculty and school. build together, laugh together and celebrate together.  After all, this is OUR school, OUR profession, OUR district, OUR students and OUR letter grade.
