Look ahead for April 27, 2015

Notes from the Principal:

Thank you for your hard work this past week.  Everyone did really well in supporting our test takers and test administrators.  It is nice to see that we are quickly coming to the end of the testing window.  We do have tests everyday this week but it is only one grade level a day and it should only cause minimal distractions to the other grade levels.  The irony is that as soon as the OCCT calendar closes the easyCBM window opens.  It makes me wonder who thought that was a good idea?!?

Beginning Tuesday, at the faculty meeting, we will begin talking about the professional development ideas for next year.  We will also be looking at the title one budget for the 2015-2016 school year. These conversations will continue throughout the remainder of this school year.

There are loads of good things happening here at Hayes.  Wings is off and running, literally.  Ms. Herriott has done an outstanding job working with our youngsters getting them involved in such a healthy activity.  I have a feeling we will be seeing lots of Nike swag around the campus before too long.  If you haven't made it out to participate or just take stock in what's happening I highly recommend that you go next week sometime.  It's amazing to see parents, students and staff running.

Sunrise Rotary will be coming to Hayes following the testing window to install the "buddy bench." We will be placing the bench near the playground equipment.  And before everyone gets really excited... the intent of the bench is for students to sit when they feel they don't have someone to play with; others, hopefully, will see that individual and offer to play, sit, talk... to them.  Two teachers "chillin'" on the bench really doesn't constitute as being a "buddy."

Sonic Drive In's has a program called "Limeades for learning" that will be coming to Hayes in July to paint our blacktop with four square, Hop scotch, etc... in order to assist in the creation of an educational and fun playground environment.

Republic Services has granted us the money to purchase our flower beds as well as six benches to go around the front and west side of the building.  I am hopeful we get the check to get started very soon.  The intent of the garden is to introduce our younger grades to science by having them plant and take care of the flower beds.  The older grade levels will also benefit by measuring the plants, taking soil and water samples, and helping with the upkeep of the flower beds.  What a great way to incorporate some hands on science activities to our students.

United Way will once again be partnering with Hayes Elementary next year.  Currently, and for next year as well, they will be working with our kindergarten students.  In addition they will be purchasing weekly readers for the campus.  They may also be purchasing additional materials such as motivation and Buckle Down workbooks as well as learner "bags" for our younger grades to take home.

I look forward to having a great week.  Keep your patience with your students and know that summer is just around the corner.

Notes from the Principal:

There are some excellent articles this week!  Some of the best I have read in a while.  Please take the time to read one or two.

Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication to the students of Hayes Elementary.  Your time and efforts show every day.  Your students, whether they can truly express it or not, appreciate the skills taught to them.  So many are grateful for people taking a vested interest in them.  We often forget in the day to day operations of school how important those relationships are to our students.  Continue to work, fight, scratch, claw, dig, push and pull for your students.  It is not too late to make a difference in their lives this year.

I also think it's time we take a moment to realize the obstacles continue to contend with finishing out this school year.  At the moment we have Ms. Ladd, Ms. Ingersoll, Ms. Roland, Ms. Williams, Dr. Henderson, two vacancies as well as being down a P.E. teacher.  That's our reality this coming Monday.  Eight, 8!, staff members short when the doors open at 8:00am.  Of those eight positions we have ONE, yes I said 1, substitute teacher to assist.  I have been told that a substitute for the library has not been found and is highly unlikely for the remainder of this year.  We can not seem to get substitutes for any of the other available positions.
As a result of our substitute shortage Mr. Nielsen has been moved to cover one of the 6th grade positions for the remainder of the year, Ms. Hutchinson was to cover for Mr. Nielsen for part of the day but as of yet has been unable to do so due to Pre-k being down staff members.  Our third grade classes are HUGE, as are the rest of our testing grades.  All of these things and we continue to teach our students to the best of our ability as our enrollment continues to spike. By the way, we are now officially at 530 students.
It is easy to get frustrated and lay down on this year.  After all we have have plenty of valid excuses as to why we have the potential to not do well on the OCCT exams.  I am asking that each of us keep a positive frame of mind and a willing heart when it comes to our students.  Let's finish the school year in style.  Continue to teach like your life depends on it.  Those exams will take care of themselves.  We will get the letter grade we get, we will not get the letter grade we deserve.

A positive spin...
- We are a learner first pilot campus for next year
- Our title budget didn't get cut like SO many other schools in OKCPS
- Student attendance is up .4% over last year
- Our benchmark scores indicate we improved from last year.
- We have new marriages and additional family members to celebrate
- We have several teachers that have received state and national recognition this year
- Wings pilot campus
- PAL school
- Rally Ball Champions
- Really, really, ridiculously good looking.  - Zoolander

Notes from the Principal:

"They're Here!"  The OCCT exams are here.

All of the hard work, sweat, long nights, parent calls, grading, lesson creating, professional development, and time devoted to making a difference in the lives of our students is about to be put to the test.
During these next few weeks keep a positive frame of mind.  Students are like dogs and bees, they smell fear!  They feel it when you are stressed out... and for some students it stresses them out.

A couple of things I need for everyone to have in place and ready to go for the next couple of weeks.

Testers!
1.  Have a classroom incentive for perfect, or pretty darned close, attendance on exam days.  The less make-up exams we have to complete the better.  Ask your peers for some good ideas if you are in need of some.
2.  Read over and be familiar with what you're doing come test day.
3.  If testing is going on close to your room... go a different direction to get to the restrooms or specials.  Don't interrupt!
4.  Make sure your students understand the importance of these exams.  These are important for the student, school, and community as well as you the teacher.  They need to take them seriously and try their best.
5.  Know the proper procedures and count your exams, etc...
6.  ACTIVE MONITOR!  If you think this is directed at you it more than likely IS.  Get up and walk around!
7.  Keep a positive frame of mind.  It's infectious and the students will do better.  It's science!
8.  Don't be absent.

Non-Testers!
1.  Keep the hallways clear.  Don't interrupt!  Go to specials, the restroom and lunch in a quiet and uniform fashion.
2.  Continue to teach!  This should go without saying...
3.  Be prepared to step in and help.  Be a team player.  Just saying!
4.  Be flexible and pay attention to the look ahead.  Specials times will be reversing, flipping and turning around.  EVERYONE deserves their planning time, not just you.
5.  Root those kids on!  You see a kid in the hallway, tell them they're going to ace that test!  Talk to your former students and tell them you care... because you should care!  There's nothing worse than the "not my kids" kind of teacher.
6.  Have a plan for the 22nd and 23rd of April.  Those are HEAVY testing days and we will be shutting down the school those two days.  Be ready!
7.  Smile.  They're infectious.... again, science!
8.  Don't be absent.

Thank you for all of your hard work.  We are going to get the grade we get.  We are not going to get the grade we deserve.  Keep your head up and know we are all in this together.
