Notes from the Principal:

Challenges:

Our greatest need as teachers is understanding the challenges we face and knowing what we need to overcome them.  Most of the time this is a difficult child but it could also be stepping out of our comfort zone and doing those things that we fear the most.  Too often we spend our time worrying about the wrong things.  Sometimes we worry about things that are not even within our control.  No one is effective spending 95% of their time worrying about the 5% of their daily routine.  There is an expression that comes to mind, a "Rossism" perhaps, that says "stop worrying about the rat manure when there is elephant manure all around."  We need to concentrate on the right things and do a better job of picking our battles.

Try to understand that there are lessons in each and every challenge, a difficult student for example, and learn to handle them; in doing so you may just turn them into positive experiences making your time at Hayes a whole lot better.

"For life and talents and wealth and fame are given to men in trust, and each must work with the gifts he has 'til his flesh returns to dust, for this is the law that governs all, and this is the common test - He that shall come to the best life has must give to the world his best."  -Author Unknown.

Notes from the Principal:

Here recently I have been reminded of the story of the duck that walked into the grocery store.

A duck walks up to a grocer and asks "You got any grapes?"  "No." replied the grocer and the duck walked out.

A few minutes later, he walked back in. "You got any grapes?" He asked.

The grocer frowned. "I told you.  I don't have any grapes."  The duck nodded and walked out.

A few minutes later, the duck walked back in.  "You got any grapes?" He asked again.

The grocers face got red, and he leaned over the counter and looked at the duck angrily.  "Look, I've told you three times no.  I don't have any grapes.  If you come and ask me that question again, I'm going to nail your little webbed feet to the floor.  Do you understand?"  The duck shrugged and walked out.

A few minutes later, the duck walked back in.  "You got any nails?" He asked.
The grocer tried to control his temper. "No!"  The duck looked around.  "Got any grapes?"

Sometimes our students do not give up easily.  Instead of losing your focus or worse yet, your temper, keep the frame of mind that we are here to instruct and guide as well as role model those expectations we all know many of our students are lacking.  Respect is a TWO way street and discipline will not be as big of an issue when you do not force the issue.  Remember our students are unique and wonderful and are full of surprises and talents.

It is important for our students to understand the reasons for rules.  Most importantly, and lastly, the actions we take are much more effective than the anger you show.

Have a great week!

Notes from the Principal:

Discipline isn't just punishing, forcing compliance or stamping out bad behavior.  Rather, discipline has to do with caring about others, controlling one's self and putting someone else's wishes before one's own when the occasion calls for it.

How is your classroom discipline?  What behaviors are you seeing?  What are the consequences?  How's that working for you?  Be ready to talk about these questions.  It may be in passing in the halls, during lunch, plan time or during grade level meetings.

Notes from the Principal:

"Although educators and parents make great efforts, we cannot prevent adversity from affecting our students, but we can teach them to be more resilient by altering how children think about their challenging situations." - Principal El.

What makes a good teacher?
Command of the subject matter.  Effective teachers know their subject matter inside and out, they also have a passion for their profession.
Care about student growth.  Effective teachers take time to consider each student as an individual, their needs, and their interests.
Character.  Effective teachers create a memorable impression on their students.
Remember these important aspects everyday you come to work:  What we do is important.  We can do it.  We will not give up on you.  This goes for us as professionals as well as the students we teach.
We as educators must believe that all students have the capacity and ability to learn.  These messages of belief must be sent on a daily basis to ours students so that they will begin to believe in themselves and become motivated members of our school community.

I want to challenge you to become an inspiration to the students you lead.  You can do it.
